Get clued in on the reasons why you have not achieved the goals you set out to have accomplished

The space

We are well into the second half of the year and as we approach the end, we might find ourselves reflecting on what we have achieved thus far. If you have achieved the goals you set out for yourself at the beginning of the year, kudos to you! smiley If not, despair not for there are many in the same boat for according to U.S News & World report, 80% of New year resolutions fail by February. While people fail to keep their resolutions for varying reasons, there are some common things that may be standing in the way.

Keep on reading if you are ready to find out what reasons may be impeding your goal achievement.

Procrastination.

Too much plotting and not enough acting. Failure to act deters you before you even start!

You can read all the self-help books on your kindle, listen to them on your audible app or podcasts but at the end of the day if you do nothing about it, you will be that person who always shouts at church, “I receive it!” Yet we shall never see what you receive for after all, the good book says that “Faith without works is dead.” Don’t get me wrong. Seek inspiration and garner all the knowledge you can - I am all for that. Then put at least one idea into practice and you will be well on your way to achieving your goal and will be well ahead of the game.

Bottom line: you will not progress if you do not act.

You want it and you want it now.

Ever heard Haraka haraka haina Baraka (a Swahili proverb that translates to hurry hurry has no blessing). Well, these wise men were not mistaken. Nothing worthwhile comes with the snap of a finger. If all our goals came quick and easy, everybody would be going it. You may be wondering what I am talking about because you have achieved your dream quickly and easily. Well, my response is you need to dream bigger for if your goals can be achieved faster than you can say Jack Robinson, they are not big enough. Be systematic and strategic in setting out your goals in order not to lose focus when the progress is not as fast as you may want it to be.

Don’t let impatience discourage you from following through with your goals if they don’t start to materialize immediately.

You want it easy as A B C.

Everyone wants to come out of school and step into the shoes of a C.E.O, G.M, M.D, among other leadership positions. Ever heard of climbing the ladder? No one ever leaps to the top. Unless you are a super hero. Then you are exempt from this scenario as you are busy saving the world. As for the rest of us, we have to work for it! These are the hard facts:

We can’t all be C-suite material all at once.

We have to wait our turn.

It is in our waiting that we mold ourselves into the leaders that we aspire to be one day. So equip yourself as best as you can in the position you are in so that when your time comes to shine, you don’t just get your fifteen minutes of fame and fizzle out, but leave an unprecedented legacy behind.

Unclear goals.

If you don’t track your progress, you will be unclear about them and if you are unclear, how can you then achieve them?

Track your progress by keeping a record of where you want to be in order to help sustain your achievement attitude. This can be in the form of a journal, a vision board, a typed document or any other form of record keeping. Whatever floats your boat. Keep it where you see it every day in order to keep track and have a constant reminder of the need to work towards your goal and also know where there is need for change. As Zig Ziglar wisely put it, “When obstacles arise, you change direction to reach your goal, you do not change your decision to get there”.

Lack of motivation to change.

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily,” Zig Ziglar. Majority of people when facing change, feel overwhelmed and their first instinct is to throw in the towel forgetting the only constant thing is change. If you are not ready to change, you will find an excuse not to do something. It can be hard to stay motivated when we feel we are alone in our corner working towards our goals. The good news is you don’t have to work alone. Find yourself a mentor, someone who shares the same interests or join a support group to find motivation every day. Do what you have to do to keep making positive decisions in order to achieve these milestones. Use online resources such as motivate, forest, strides if you can’t find people near you to keep you motivated. Use all available avenues available to you to your advantage to keep you motivated to achieve your dream.

You can do this!

When you realize only you can empower yourself to achieve your goals, you will not let anything stand in your way. If you are ready for change, look out for the next part in this series which I share great courses you can enroll in for your personal and career growth.
